From Fear to Fun : Reviving Childhood Superstitions

Are you superstitious?

I used to take superstitions  seriously—avoiding ladders, waving to magpies, and knocking on wood like my luck depended on it.

But these days? I do them with a giggle, passing them on to the kids as little quirks rather than rules to live by.

Here are eight superstitions I still play along with:

1. Walking Under a Ladder – I used to dodge them, now I stroll under just to prove I can.

2. Waving to a Magpie – “Hello, Mr. Magpie!” I say, much to the kids’ amusement.

3. Black Cats – Good luck or bad? I tell the kids it depends on the cat’s mood!

4. Friday the 13th – Instead of fearing it, I treat it like a fun, ‘spooky’ day.

5. Breaking a Mirror – I still handle mirrors carefully, but if one breaks? “Uh-oh, guess I’ve got seven years of adventure ahead!”

6. Opening an Umbrella Indoors – I’ll pop one open just to see the kids’ reactions.

7. Knocking on Wood – Still a habit, but now I make a big show of it.

8. Spilled Salt – I’ll throw a pinch over my shoulder and tell the kids, “Just keeping the bad luck away!”

Superstitions used to be little rules I followed, but now they’re just fun traditions I share with the next generation.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll pass them on with a giggle too!

Agreed. We had a massive mirror in our bathroom we wanted to remove, but do you think we could find a tradesman that would do it? There are still a lot of very superstitious people still out there. Have a good day 👍
