I would choose Mary Lennox, the little girl in The Secret Garden.
She started out unhappy and full of worry, but everything changed when she stepped into the garden. She left her stresses behind and focused on the beauty around her — the fresh air, the blooming flowers, the animals, and the kindness of new friends.
It was her curiosity that led her there.
She asked questions, followed hidden paths, and didn’t give up until she found the key. That spark of curiosity opened the door to something magical.
The garden helped her grow.
She became stronger, happier, and more caring. It wasn’t just the plants that came to life — she did too. And once she found that joy, she didn’t keep it to herself. She was determined to help everyone around her feel the same — to bring them into the garden, show them the beauty of nature, and help them heal too.
What I love most is how the story shows the power of simple, good things: sunshine, nature, friendship, and hope.
And most of all — connection.
Being outside, caring for the garden, and building bonds with others reminded Mary she wasn’t alone. That connection brought joy not just to her, but to everyone around her.
That’s why I’d choose to be her. She reminds me that even after hard times, healing and happiness are possible — if we stay curious, care for others, notice the good, and stay connected to the world and people around us.
So go outside.
Breathe in the fresh air.
Touch the trees.
Listen to the birds.
Smile at someone.
Stay curious.
Look for beauty, even in hidden places.
Connect — with nature, with people, and with yourself.
Like Mary, you might just find your own secret garden.
Journal Prompt:
Imagine your own version of a “secret garden.”
Where is it?
What does it look like, sound like, and feel like?
Who or what would you invite into that space?
How can staying curious, connecting with nature, and reaching out to others help you grow and feel more at peace — just like Mary did?
