Grey’s Anatomy Season 23: Time for a Character Reset

I’ve been a loyal fan of Grey’s Anatomy for years, so hearing it’s been renewed for Season 23 should be exciting. And in some ways it is — but if I’m honest, the show has started to feel a bit predictable. Some episodes are brilliant, and others fall completely flat. The magic is still there somewhere, but it needs a reset.

Some characters feel like they’ve drifted away from what once made them great.

Owen Hunt once worked well when he was a strong, confident leader shaped by his military background. But now his story feels tired, and honestly, it might be time for him to move on.

Characters like Miranda Bailey and Ben Warren could shift into more supporting roles. They represent something rare in the show — a stable marriage and shared purpose — and that could be shown without needing constant dramatic storylines.

Meredith Grey used to be the heart of the show, but lately her character feels flat. I’d love to see her appear occasionally as a respected mentor figure, focused on her family and Alzheimer’s research. She could show up when cases connect to her research or when younger doctors need guidance.

The real future of the show should be the interns.

Characters like Simone Griffith and Lucas Adams had moments of real chemistry and competition, and that dynamic should be explored more. Especially Lucas — his ADHD could be shown not just as a struggle, but also as a strength.

Right now Simone feels a bit dull, but with stronger writing she could become much more interesting.

One of the best long-term character arcs on the show belongs to Amelia Shepherd. Her growth has been incredible. Now she should step into the role of mentor, guiding the new doctors through their own struggles and showing what real development looks like.

Medicine is intense, competitive, emotional — and the show should reflect that again.

The older characters shouldn’t disappear completely, but they should step back and allow the next generation to take the spotlight. They can appear as mentors, leaders, and sources of wisdom — not the centre of every storyline.

Because what made Grey’s Anatomy special in the beginning wasn’t just the hospital.

It was watching young doctors grow up.

If the show leans back into that idea, Season 23 — and beyond — could feel fresh again.
