What Music Do You Work Best To? Share Your Favorites!

Daily writing prompt
What do you listen to while you work?

Here’s a little glimpse into the soundscape of my workday:

Sofa Sessions = Netflix Rewatch Therapy

When I’m on the sofa or in my recliner with my laptop, comfort is the priority — and that includes comfort TV. Right now, I’m diving back into a rewatch of The Big Bang Theory.

There’s something so soothing about familiar characters, predictable storylines, and a few light laughs to keep me company while I work on autopilot tasks. It doesn’t demand my full attention, and that’s the point — it keeps me company without overwhelming me.

Desk Days = Local Radio Vibes

When I sit at my desk, I turn on the local radio station. It keeps me connected to the real world and local issues and breaks the isolation that sometimes comes with solo work. A bit of music, a bit of chatter, and it feels like I’m working alongside others — even if I’m not.

Headphones In = Focus Mode

When my family is home or the noise levels rise (which they often do), I shift into headphone mode. Depending on my mood and the task at hand, I’ll choose from:

  • 🎙️ A good podcast — something calming or inspiring
  • 🎶 Instrumental pop — upbeat but without lyrics to distract me
  • 🔊 Ministry of Sound Classics — for those moments I need an energy boost and a bit of nostalgia

Music and sound help me stay grounded and in my own zone, even when life is swirling around me.

What I listen to while working isn’t just background noise — it’s a way of managing energy, focus, and emotion. Chronic pain, family life, and neurodivergence all impact how I show up to work, and sound has become one of my most reliable tools.

Whether it’s familiar TV, comforting radio, or energizing playlists, these small choices help me feel more like myself, even on the hard days.
