The Brothers Who Had My Back
Growing up, I was lucky enough to have not one, but two big brothers who made life feel that little bit easier, lighter, and safer.
One of them was my safe space. I’d plonk myself beside his bed, unload my entire day — every drama, every emotion, every overthink — and he’d just listen. No judgement, no advice unless I asked, just pure presence. Then, without fail, he’d smile and say, “Right, who do I need to kill for you?” in that perfectly protective, joking big brother way. It made me feel heard, protected, and totally loved.
The other kept me grounded. He was the one who told me when I was being a bit ridiculous (and let’s be honest — sometimes I needed that). He’d call me out and always managed to make me laugh, even when I didn’t want to. He helped me not take myself too seriously and brought humour into the tough moments.
Together, they were the perfect balance — one gave me space to feel, the other reminded me to laugh. I didn’t always realise it at the time, but looking back now, I can see how much those moments shaped me.
Everyone should have someone who listens without fixing and someone who can lovingly tell them they’re being a bit of an eejit.
I just happened to get both in brother form.
