Living with chronic pain can make even the simplest tasks feel like a mountain to climb.
On days when your body feels overwhelmed, the pressure to “do it all” can be too much. This is why I’ve adopted a simple but powerful question each morning:
“What is my priority today?”
It helps me focus on one thing that I can accomplish, without the overwhelming burden of unrealistic expectations.
Some days, that priority might be as simple as resting or managing pain, and that’s okay.
8 Tips for Choosing Your Priorities:
- Be realistic: Assess your physical and emotional energy for the day before deciding what to focus on.
- Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels and allow that to guide your priority for the day.
- Limit the list: Narrow down your tasks to one or two key things rather than overwhelming yourself.
- Honor your needs: Self-care is often the most important priority when living with chronic pain.
- Be flexible: Priorities may change throughout the day, and that’s perfectly fine.
- Start small: Focus on one achievable task and celebrate small victories, even on tough days.
- Check in with yourself: Ask yourself throughout the day if your actions align with your priority.
- Let go of guilt: Avoid guilt over what you didn’t get done. You are doing the best you can.
Remember, chronic pain may limit our capacity at times, but it doesn’t define who we are or what we can accomplish.
By identifying one meaningful priority each day, we can move forward with intention and self-compassion.
