Life in the ’90s

What were your parents doing at your age?

My Parents at 40 in the 1990s: A Nostalgic Look Back

The ’90s were a vibe—scrunchies, dial-up tones, and Friday night sitcoms. But for my parents, turning 40 in this era wasn’t just about pop culture. It was about juggling work, family, and a world that was changing faster than a rewound VHS tape.

Picture this: clunky computers, fax machines buzzing, and early e-mail that took forever to load. My parents were in the thick of it—working stable jobs where remote work was unheard of and “networking” happened at the pub, not online.

Raising kids back then meant landline rules, Saturday morning cartoons, and Blockbuster movie nights. Family dinners weren’t optional, and weekends often meant trips to the mobile home. The only screen-time battle was over who got to use the TV first.

If you wanted to go online, you had to wait for the dial-up connection (and pray no one picked up the phone). Music came from cassette tapes, and if you didn’t rewind your rental movie, you risked a fine.

Simpler times? Maybe.

Slower times? Definitely.

Socializing meant actual face time—not FaceTime. They met friends for drinks in each other’s homes.

Family vacations? Often a road trip to the mobile home, where entertainment was a deck of cards and a radio.

Looking back, it’s a reminder that connection, simple joys, and being present never go out of style.

What do you remember most about life in the ’90s?
