Core values are the beliefs and principles that guide our decisions, actions, and relationships. They are like an internal compass that help us navigate life’s challenges and make choices that align with who we truly are. Understanding and living in alignment with your core values leads to greater happiness, fulfillment, and authenticity.
8 Tips for Discovering Your Core Values
- Reflect on Past Experiences
Think about times in your life when you felt truly fulfilled and proud of your actions. What values were you honoring at that time? - Identify Role Models
Consider the people you admire most. What values do they embody? Chances are, these qualities reflect your own values. - Ask Yourself What Matters Most
Take time to list the things that matter most to you, such as love, success, peace, adventure, or honesty. - Evaluate Your Current Life
Look at how you spend your time and energy. Are you aligning your actions with what you claim to value? - Notice Your Emotional Reactions
Pay attention to moments when you feel angry, sad, or joyful. These emotional reactions often arise from situations where your core values are either being honored or violated. - Write a Personal Mission Statement
Create a mission statement that reflects your core values. This will help you see them clearly and guide your decisions. - Seek Feedback from Trusted People
Ask those closest to you what they think you value most. Sometimes others see things in us that we may not immediately recognize. - Make a Values List
Write a list of 10 to 20 values that resonate with you. Then, narrow it down to your top 5 core values by asking yourself which are the most non-negotiable in your life.
Reflect and Journal
Finding your core values takes time and self-reflection. Once you’ve identified them, leave space in your journal to revisit and explore your values deeper.
Ask yourself:
- What values have guided my decisions in the past?
- How do my values show up in my daily life?
- Are there areas where I am not living in alignment with my values?
- Which value is the most important to me right now?
- How can I honor my values more in the coming weeks?
- What does living in alignment with my values look like for me?
- How can I set boundaries that reflect my core values?
- When was a time I felt disconnected from my values, and why?
Journaling on these questions helps reinforce your core values and ensures you are living a life that’s true to yourself.
