How to Push Through Awkward Moments in Fitness

Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

Feeling out of place is something I deal with almost every day, battling that familiar awkwardness and anxiety. But recently, I experienced it in a whole new way. It was too cold to go for my usual outdoor walk, which is so important for my mental health and chronic pain, so I decided to try the gym. I hadn’t set foot in one in years, but I needed my walk, so in I went.

I hopped on the treadmill… and immediately had no idea how to work it. I started pressing random buttons, anxiety took over and I was convinced I’d be one of those viral memes—flying off the treadmill and straight out the window.

Feeling totally out of place among all the fit, confident gym-goers, I finally went to find a staff member. I awkwardly asked for help, and after what felt like an eternity, she showed me how simple it actually was. I tried to laugh it off, joking about the “running dude” button for speed and the mountain for incline, saying, “You’d think they’d make it easier!” She smiled politely, and I spent 20 minutes walking, but the feeling of awkwardness stuck.

I haven’t been back since, but at least I made it through without any meme-worthy disasters.

Sometimes, you’ve just got to push through the awkwardness, even if it means laughing at yourself along the way.
