The Best Piece of Advice I’ve Ever Received: Making Decisions with the Information You Have

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received is this:

“Did you make your decision with all the information you had at the time?”

This simple question has changed the way I approach decision-making and how I reflect on the choices I’ve made.

In life, we’re often tempted to judge our past decisions based on what we know now. Hindsight is a powerful tool, and it’s easy to feel regret or guilt when things don’t work out. But what I’ve come to realize is that we can only make choices based on the knowledge, facts, and feelings we had in that moment.

Here’s why this advice matters:

  1. Clarity in the Present: When making a decision, it’s vital to consider if you’ve done your homework—have you gathered all the available information, consulted those who matter, and considered the pros and cons? If the answer is yes, then you’re doing your best with what you have.
  2. Freedom from Regret: We can’t predict the future, so holding ourselves to that standard is unfair. If you made a choice with the best intentions and knowledge at the time, it was the right decision for that moment. Future outcomes shouldn’t change that.
  3. Confidence in Your Choices: This mindset encourages confidence and trust in your judgment. Knowing that you’ve considered all available facts at the time allows you to move forward with peace of mind.

It’s a grounding perspective—reminding me to avoid second-guessing or being too hard on myself. After all, decision-making isn’t about knowing the future; it’s about doing the best you can with the knowledge you have right now.
